I picked up Mediterranea’s Etna Rosso 2002 at Il Vino in Fairfax a few months ago, for around $15. I’m not sure what I was expecting - probably something pretty rustic. Instead, I found this to be a very balanced wine, with straightforward cherry fruit but also some darker mineral taste that was nicely integrated, with a good finish. It was a terrific match with (and in) the Bolognese red sauce I love to make. Much more elegant than what I expected. The fact that it’s a 2002 may have something to do with that, the age having given the wine a little time to come together.

I could certainly see myself buying this again. As well, one of the Nerello grapes (Mascalese) is on the Wine Century list, and you probably won’t find that in many other wines than an Etna Rosso DOC.
